Original Grill Daddy BBQ Grill Steam Brush with Stainless Steel Bristles

After 4 years of use, this thing still does the job. The power of steam really works and perhaps I’ll entertain the newer versions or copy cats but when this is ready to be tossed, I’ll consider purchasing a replacement.

Why I Was In Market

Every few years, I need to purchase another grill brush. My family is not year round grillers but we take advantage from April all the way through October. My current brush, which is your standard oval bristle generic finally started to shed stainless bristles and has become pretty rusted. Given we eat off that grill - obviously - I need to replace it. I needed a product to help me clean my grill without the dangers of loose bristles in our food! Are you looking for the best grill cleaning brush?

Research

After so many years of having the same type of brush, I decided I wanted something different. Different in that it would be easier to clean the grill and would have an improved arrangement of scrapers/bristles.  For me, cleaning, durability, cost, and safety almost felt equal when shopping for this. For something this simple and relatively cheap, I kept all my research to Amazon reviews and ratings. Nothing really stood out that made this an easy decision.

I've used the same type of brush since I've owned my first grill and while I wasn't unhappy with the results, I always felt like I was settling. I've always heard that steam would help dislodge the stuck on food - mostly cheese in my case so I figured I'd invest in something that gave me that functionality.

Selecting the Right Brand

I've always heard of the Grill Daddy brand. Perhaps it's been etched into my brain from seeing it on so many infomercials and when I came across it in my search, I figured it was worth a shot. I find that most brands that advertise so heavily don't make a good, nor reasonably price product. Their margins are eroded by all the marketing costs. When I saw there were several version of their signature brushes, I also notice that the reviews were similar across the board. This didn't give me much incentive or reason to choose one over another. And so I decided to go old-school and try out the original.

The Product

After it arrived, my first impression was that it was much smaller than I expected. It measured about a foot long and is really only meant for single-handed use. I was slightly disappointed, but figured it must be good enough to use with it's current size and shape.

My second disappointment came when I wanted to prepare it for our next cookout so I unscrewed the water cap and put it under a small stream of water. While filling it up, unless I kept it at a perfect horizontal position, it would begin to leak out either the front or the top (where the fill hole is). I soon realized that I can't fill it up with water and store it for the next barbecues.

Now the real test, how does it perform cleaning a stainless grill?Well, the stiff position and shape of the bristles meant it performed very well during the cleaning process. Because of the water leaking issues as described earlier, it was hard to control the water dispersion regardless of valve position, making it a big steam party. I had to move quickly to use it's power before the grill cooled off. The cleaning power evaluation factor checks out.

I haven't had a chance to take it through the dishwasher as the product says it's capable of but so far with a few cleanings under it's belt, the brush part of the Grill Daddy does seem to be holding up pretty well. I give the durability a pass but I'll update this review after more use.  This also means that so far no bristles have fallen out and is safe to use.

At a low cost, I can overlook some of the shoddy quality issues of this product. The value (calculated cost over use) of the Grill Daddy is still left to be determined but the Original version meant that I was paying less than their newer versions. The cost evaluation factor checks out.

Room for Improvement?

After using this product for several months now, I'm finding those initial pains are still very real. And while I'm still happy with the cleaning power I'd wish the actual build quality was improved. The brush feels durable but I question how long the main unit/handle will last and if it was worth leaving the tried and true cleaners.

Bottom Line

After 4 years of use, this thing still does the job. The power of steam really works and perhaps I'll entertain the newer versions or copy cats but when this is ready to be tossed, I'll consider purchasing a replacement.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on the Original Grill Daddy Barbecue Steam Brush or a product you find that woks better.
